German Shepherd stud dogs from working and show lines

German Shepherd Stud Dogs

Few breeds vary as much as the German Shepherd. Working lines, West German show lines and American show lines all look and act differently. So on VerifiedStuds each stud profile states the line, the titles and the hip and elbow results, and you can compare them side by side.

What German Shepherd stud dogs charge

German Shepherd stud fees mostly land between $500 and $2,000. A health-tested pet-line or untitled male often charges $500 to $1,200. On the other hand, titled working dogs and V or VA rated West German show males regularly ask $1,500 to $3,500.

These are market estimates, since nobody publishes official stud prices. Many Shepherd owners set the fee equal to one puppy from the litter. Shipping chilled semen adds collection and courier costs as well. See the stud fee guide for the common arrangements.

Health screening for German Shepherd stud dogs

The German Shepherd Dog Club of America asks for three items before OFA issues a CHIC number. The AKC lists the same items on its Herding Group health testing page. Owners upload them here for the Verified Health badge:

Test

What we accept

Hips

OFA hip evaluation, PennHIP or SV "a" stamp

Elbows

OFA elbow evaluation or SV elbow rating

Temperament

GSDCA Temperament Test or an equivalent working title

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

Many breeders go further. For example, a DNA test for degenerative myelopathy (DM) is common, and so are cardiac and thyroid checks. German imports usually carry the SV "a" stamp for hips and elbows instead of OFA numbers. Either way, you can search registered results on the OFA website.

Choosing between German Shepherd stud dogs

First, decide which line suits your goals. Working lines bring high drive and suit sport, police and active homes. West German show lines offer the classic black and red look with moderate drive. American show lines are bred for the AKC ring and tend to be calmer.

Next, check the proof behind the pedigree. In Germany, the SV only allows breeding after a working title, an endurance test and a breed survey. Consequently, an imported stud with IGP titles and a Koerung has already passed several filters. For American dogs, look for AKC titles and the GSDCA temperament test.

Finally, look hard at the back and hips. Avoid extreme rear angulation and a roached topline, because sound movement matters more than fashion. Also ask about DM status and the hip results of his parents and siblings.

German Shepherd temperament and working roots

The AKC describes the German Shepherd Dog as confident, courageous and smart. Captain Max von Stephanitz developed the breed in Germany around 1899 as a herding dog. Today it also leads in police, military, service and search work.

Males stand 24 to 26 inches and weigh about 65 to 90 pounds. The breed ranked 4th in AKC registrations for 2025. As a result, puppies sell easily, which makes careful sire selection even more important.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

German Shepherds normally breed naturally, and most owners prefer it when both dogs are close by. However, chilled semen opens up studs across the country, and frozen semen is the usual route for European bloodlines. Each listing therefore shows the methods and the collection costs.

If shipped semen is new to you, the dog artificial insemination guide covers timing and costs. Then see how VerifiedStuds works for the booking steps.

German Shepherd stud service FAQ

How much is a German Shepherd stud fee?

Most fees run from $500 to $2,000. However, titled working males and top West German show dogs can charge $3,500 or more.

What health tests does a German Shepherd stud need?

The parent club asks for hips, elbows and a temperament test. In addition, many breeders test for degenerative myelopathy. We also require a negative brucellosis test before breeding.

What do V and VA ratings mean?

They are German show ratings. V means excellent, and VA means excellent select, the top award at the national Sieger show. Both need a working title first.

When is a German Shepherd old enough to stud?

Final OFA hip and elbow results come at 24 months. Therefore, most responsible owners wait until two years. Ask your vet about your dog.

Can I list a breed that has no page yet?

Yes. Every breed is welcome on VerifiedStuds, even if its breed page is not written yet.
