Typical fees for Rottweiler stud dogs

Rottweiler stud fees usually run from $800 to $2,500. A health-tested male without titles often costs $800 to $1,500. In contrast, champions and dogs with German working titles or ADRK pedigrees commonly ask $2,000 to $4,000.

No registry publishes stud prices, so treat these numbers as market estimates. Some owners also price the service at the value of one puppy, or take a puppy back instead. Our stud fee guide compares those options and lists what a contract should cover.

Health clearances for Rottweiler stud dogs

The American Rottweiler Club sets the tests behind a CHIC number, and the AKC repeats them on its Working Group health testing page. Owners upload these results to earn the Verified Health badge:

Test

What we accept

Hips

OFA hip evaluation or PennHIP

Elbows

OFA elbow evaluation

Heart

Cardiac exam registered with OFA, ideally by a cardiologist

Eyes

Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO)

JLPP

Juvenile Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy DNA test

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

JLPP is a fatal nerve disease in puppies, and a simple DNA test finds carriers. As a result, two carriers should never be bred together. Heart screening matters as well, because subaortic stenosis runs in the breed. You can confirm every registered result on the OFA website.

What to look for in Rottweiler stud dogs

Start with temperament, because it is the heart of the breed. A stud should be calm, self-assured and willing to work with his handler. Shyness and sharp aggression are both serious faults, so walk away from either.

Next, study the structure. The standard asks for a medium-large, compact dog with a level back and strong, clean movement. Oversized males may look impressive, but they often move poorly and age badly. Therefore, compare the dog with the written standard, not with social media trends.

Finally, look for proof. In Germany, the ADRK only approves dogs for breeding after a suitability test called the ZTP, plus hip and elbow X-rays. Titles in obedience, tracking, herding or carting tell you a similar story. In addition, ask for photos and health results of his adult offspring.

Rottweiler temperament and background

The AKC calls the Rottweiler a loyal, loving and confident guardian. The breed drove cattle and pulled carts around the German town of Rottweil, and later served as a police dog. Males stand 24 to 27 inches tall and weigh roughly 95 to 135 pounds.

The Rottweiler ranked 8th in AKC registrations for 2025, so demand for puppies is steady. However, popularity also brings careless breeding. For that reason, a well-chosen sire with a stable mind protects both your litter and the breed.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Rottweilers generally mate naturally without help. Still, artificial insemination is common when the dogs live far apart or when either dog is inexperienced. Chilled semen ships overnight, whereas frozen semen stores for years and suits imported bloodlines. Every profile shows which methods the owner offers.

Never used shipped semen before? Then start with the dog artificial insemination guide. You can also see how VerifiedStuds works step by step.

Rottweiler stud service FAQ

How much does a Rottweiler stud cost?

Most stud fees sit between $800 and $2,500. However, champion and titled German-line males often charge $2,000 to $4,000.

Which health tests should a Rottweiler stud have?

The American Rottweiler Club list covers hips, elbows, a cardiac exam, an eye exam and the JLPP DNA test. We also ask for a negative brucellosis test before each breeding.

What is JLPP, and why does it matter?

JLPP is an inherited nerve disease that kills affected puppies young. A carrier is healthy, but two carriers can produce affected pups. Therefore, always check both parents.

How old should a Rottweiler be before stud work?

OFA issues final hip and elbow results at 24 months, so most careful owners wait until then. Your vet can advise on your individual dog.

Is the site limited to certain breeds?

No. Any breed can be listed on VerifiedStuds. We are simply writing the breed pages in stages.
