Chow Chow stud dogs with sound joints and clear eyes
With its lion mane, blue-black tongue and scowling face, the Chow Chow looks like no other dog. It is also one of the oldest breeds on earth. However, heavy coats and heavy bone hide problems easily. So VerifiedStuds shows each stud's test results and fee, with an identity-verified owner.

Claim this spotChow Chow stud fees usually run from $800 to $2,000. A health-tested male without titles often charges $800 to $1,500. However, AKC champions and proven sires from show kennels commonly ask $2,000 to $3,000.
These are market estimates, because fees are private. Unusual colors are often priced high, yet the standard lists only five. Our stud fee guide explains how to weigh an offer.

Eyelids that roll inward, known as entropion, are common in the breed and often need surgery. Therefore, ask whether the stud or his parents had an eyelid operation. Elbow and hip dysplasia matter too. In addition, the thick coat makes Chows sensitive to heat. Registered results are on the OFA website.
Our health testing guides explain each of these evaluations.
First, watch him walk. The Chow has almost straight hind legs, which gives a short, stilted stride. Even so, he should move soundly and without pain. So ask for video, since coat hides everything in photos.
Next, check his eyes and breathing. The eyes should be clean and open, without squinting or tear stains. In addition, the muzzle should be broad but not so short that he struggles in warm weather.
Finally, consider coat, color and temper. Chows come in rough and smooth coats, in red, black, blue, cinnamon and cream. Names such as lilac or champagne are sales terms. Above all, a stud must be calm and manageable, because the breed is naturally aloof with strangers.
The AKC describes the Chow Chow as dignified, bright and serious-minded. The breed appears in Chinese art that is about 2,000 years old. It worked as a guard, a hunter and a hauler.
Chows stand 17 to 20 inches tall and weigh 45 to 70 pounds. They are clean, quiet and loyal to their own people. Because they can be wary, breeders put great weight on a steady, well-socialized sire.
Chows can breed naturally. However, the straight hind legs, dense coat and independent nature often make it awkward. For that reason, many breeders use artificial insemination. Chilled semen is also widely offered, and each profile lists the methods.

How much is a Chow Chow stud fee?
Most owners charge $800 to $2,000. However, champions and proven kennel sires can ask up to $3,000.
What health tests should a Chow Chow stud have?
The parent club list covers hips, elbows, patellas, eyes and thyroid. We also require a negative brucellosis test.
Why do Chows have blue tongues?
The blue-black tongue is a breed trait caused by heavy pigment. Puppies are born with pink tongues that darken in the first weeks.
Are lilac or merle Chows purebred?
The standard accepts red, black, blue, cinnamon and cream only. Merle does not occur in the purebred Chow, so it points to a cross.
Can other Chinese breeds be listed?
Yes. Every breed is welcome on VerifiedStuds.
