Working Catahoula Leopard Dog stud dogs with health results
Louisiana's state dog is a tough, independent stock dog with a spotted coat and often glass-blue eyes. That striking coat comes from the merle gene, which needs careful handling. On VerifiedStuds, every owner is identity verified, and each profile shows hearing and health results beside the fee.

Claim this spotCatahoula stud fees usually run from $400 to $1,200. A health-tested male with no proven litters often asks $400 to $700. However, proven hog and cattle dogs, and titled sires, can ask $800 to $1,500.
These are market estimates, since fees are private. Working ability counts for more than looks in this breed. The stud fee guide explains contracts and return services.

The breed sits in the AKC Foundation Stock Service, so it has no full AKC parent club list yet. However, breed clubs agree on the main risks. We suggest these results:

Hips
OFA hip evaluation or PennHIP
Hearing
BAER test, with both ears reported
Eyes
Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist
Brucellosis
Negative test taken before the breeding
Deafness is linked to the merle gene and to heavy white markings. A BAER test checks each ear separately, which matters because a dog can be deaf on one side without anyone noticing. In addition, hip dysplasia occurs in the breed. Registered results are public on the OFA website.
See our health testing guides for how each test works.
The leopard pattern is merle. One copy of the gene gives the spotted coat. However, a puppy with two copies, called a double merle, is often mostly white and has a high risk of deafness and eye defects.
Therefore, the safest pairing is a leopard to a solid-colored dog. Many Catahoula breeders do pair two leopards, and that produces a share of double merle puppies in each litter. So ask the stud owner for his color genetics, and decide before the breeding, not after.
First, look at what he does. This is a working breed, bred to bay hogs and gather rough cattle. A sire who works stock, hunts or holds a title has proved his nerve, stamina and sense.
Next, check his papers. The United Kennel Club recognizes the breed, and the National Association of Louisiana Catahoulas keeps its own registry. The AKC records it in the Foundation Stock Service. Any recognized registry is accepted here.
Finally, be honest about temperament. Catahoulas are loyal, protective and independent. As a result, they need a job and a confident owner.
Catahoulas usually breed naturally without trouble. However, working breeders often look across several states for a proven sire, so chilled semen is common. Each profile lists the methods on offer.

How much is a Catahoula stud fee?
Most owners charge $400 to $1,200. However, proven working sires can ask up to $1,500. These figures are estimates.
What health tests should a Catahoula stud have?
Hips and a BAER hearing test are the core, plus a recent negative brucellosis test. An eye exam is a useful extra.
Can two leopard Catahoulas be bred together?
They can, but about one puppy in four will be a double merle, with a high risk of deafness and eye defects. A leopard to a solid is safer.
Is the Catahoula an AKC breed?
Not fully. The AKC keeps it in the Foundation Stock Service, while the UKC recognizes it as a full breed.
Why do some Catahoulas have blue eyes?
Blue or "glass" eyes come with the merle gene. They are normal in the breed and do not affect sight by themselves.
