What American Bulldog stud dogs cost

American Bulldog stud fees usually run from $800 to $2,500. A health-tested male with no proven litters often asks $800 to $1,200. However, titled dogs and proven producers from known lines can ask $1,500 to $3,000.

These are market estimates, since fees are private. Working titles and hip scores both raise the price. The stud fee guide explains contracts and return services.

Health tests for American Bulldog stud dogs

The breed sits in the AKC Foundation Stock Service, so it has no AKC parent club list yet. However, breed clubs agree on the main risks: hip and elbow dysplasia, and two inherited diseases with DNA tests. We suggest these results:

Test

What we accept

Hips

OFA hip evaluation or PennHIP

Elbows

OFA elbow evaluation

NCL

DNA test for neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis

Ichthyosis

DNA test for the breed's skin scaling disorder

Heart

Cardiac exam registered with OFA

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

NCL is a fatal nerve disease, and ichthyosis causes lifelong skin trouble. Because both are recessive, a carrier bred to a clear dog produces no affected puppies. Therefore, a DNA report protects every litter. Registered results are public on the OFA website.

See our health testing guides for how each test works.

How to choose between American Bulldog stud dogs

First, learn the two types. The Johnson, or bully, type is heavier, with a shorter muzzle and more bone. In contrast, the Scott, or standard, type is leaner and more athletic. Many dogs today are hybrids of the two.

Next, check his papers. The United Kennel Club recognizes the breed, and so do the American Bulldog Association and the National Kennel Club. The AKC records it in the Foundation Stock Service. Any recognized registry is accepted here, but his papers should match your female's so the litter can be registered.

Finally, judge his breathing and movement. A good male works in the heat without distress. Extreme heads and short muzzles reduce that ability, so moderate dogs are the safer choice.

American Bulldog temperament and background

The American Bulldog descends from working bulldogs kept on farms in the American South, where they caught hogs and guarded property. After the Second World War, breeders John D. Johnson and Alan Scott rebuilt the breed, which is why the two types carry their names. The UKC recognized it in 1999.

At home, the breed is loyal, confident and gentle with children. However, it is strong and needs early training. As a result, steady temperament should rank beside health when you choose a sire.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

American Bulldogs usually breed naturally. However, heavier bully-type males sometimes need help, so artificial insemination is common. Chilled semen is also popular, because breeders travel far for the right line. Each profile lists the methods on offer.

The dog artificial insemination guide explains timing and shipping. Then see how VerifiedStuds works.
