Border Collie stud dogs from working, sport and show lines

Border Collie Stud Dogs

Many people call the Border Collie the smartest of all dogs. It is certainly one of the most driven. Because working, sport and show lines differ so much, VerifiedStuds asks each stud owner to state the line, the registry, the titles and the health results. Every owner is also identity verified.

What Border Collie stud dogs cost

Border Collie stud fees generally range from $500 to $1,500. A health-tested male without titles often charges $500 to $1,000. However, open sheepdog trial winners, agility champions and proven sires can ask $1,200 to $2,500.

These are market estimates, because fees are agreed privately. Among stockmen, a pup from the litter is a traditional payment. Our stud fee guide explains how to record either arrangement.

Health tests for Border Collie stud dogs

The Border Collie Society of America asks for two evaluations, which the AKC lists on its Herding Group health testing page. Owners upload them for the Verified Health badge:

Test

What we accept

Hips

OFA hip evaluation or PennHIP

Eyes

Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO)

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

DNA testing is just as important in this breed. For example, breeders screen for Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), trapped neutrophil syndrome (TNS), NCL, IGS and the MDR1 drug sensitivity. Tests for early deafness and glaucoma risk exist too. Epilepsy has no test, so ask about seizures in the family. Registered results are on the OFA website.

See our health testing guides for a simple introduction to hips, eyes and DNA panels.

How to choose between Border Collie stud dogs

First, pick the right line. Working dogs are bred purely for stock sense, and many are registered with the American Border Collie Association instead of the AKC. Sport lines are bred for speed and focus in agility and flyball. Show lines, meanwhile, are bred to the AKC standard and tend to be calmer.

Next, look for proof of work. For a herding sire, that means trial results or video on sheep or cattle. For a sport sire, it means titles. In addition, ask whether he can settle in the house, because an off switch is priceless in this breed.

Finally, compare DNA results with your female's. Two carriers of CEA or TNS should not be paired. Also avoid merle to merle breedings, which risk deaf and blind puppies.

Border Collie temperament and history

The AKC describes the Border Collie as affectionate, smart and energetic. The breed was developed on the border of England and Scotland to gather sheep with its famous stare, known as the eye.

Males stand 19 to 22 inches tall and weigh 30 to 55 pounds. The breed ranked 26th in AKC registrations for 2025. Because these dogs need real work, good breeders screen buyers and choose stable, biddable sires.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Border Collies breed naturally with ease. However, the best working and sport sires are scattered across the country and overseas. Therefore, chilled and frozen semen are widely used, especially for imported British and Irish lines. Each profile lists the methods offered.

Border Collie stud service FAQ

How much is a Border Collie stud fee?

Most owners charge $500 to $1,500. However, trial winners and proven sires can ask up to $2,500.

What health tests should a Border Collie stud have?

The parent club asks for hip and eye evaluations. Breeders also run a DNA panel that includes CEA, TNS and MDR1. We require a negative brucellosis test too.

What is the difference between ABCA and AKC Border Collies?

The ABCA registers dogs bred for herding ability and does not hold shows. The AKC registers the breed for shows, sports and herding events.

Can two merle Border Collies be bred?

They should not be. A quarter of the puppies would be double merle, with a high risk of deafness and blindness.

Are working breeds without a page welcome?

Yes. Every breed can be listed on VerifiedStuds.
