Chihuahua stud dogs with weight and health results

Chihuahua Stud Dogs

In the world's smallest breed, every ounce counts. The weight of the sire affects how safely a tiny female can whelp, and knees, hearts and eyes all need checking. So VerifiedStuds lists each stud's true adult weight, coat, health results and fee, with an identity-verified owner.

What Chihuahua stud dogs cost

Chihuahua stud fees usually fall between $300 and $1,000. A health-checked male without titles often charges $300 to $800. However, AKC champions and small, well-built males in popular colors can ask $1,000 to $2,000.

These are market estimates, because fees are private. Litters are small, often one to three puppies. For that reason, read the return-service terms closely. Our stud fee guide explains them.

Health exams for a Chihuahua sire

The Chihuahua Club of America recommends three exams, which the AKC lists on its Toy Group health testing page. Owners upload them for the Verified Health badge:

Test

What we accept

Patellas

Veterinary patellar luxation exam, registered with OFA

Heart

Cardiac exam registered with OFA

Eyes

Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO)

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

Loose kneecaps are the most common fault, so the patella grade is important. Heart murmurs and collapsing trachea also occur. In addition, many Chihuahuas have a molera, a soft spot on the skull, which the breed standard allows. However, ask your vet about hydrocephalus if the skull looks very domed. Registered exams appear on the OFA website.

For plain explanations of patella, heart and eye exams, read our health testing guides.

How to choose between Chihuahua stud dogs

First, compare weights. The standard allows up to six pounds, and most breeders pick a male that is lighter than the female. As a result, the puppies are less likely to be too big for her. Females under about four pounds are rarely bred at all.

Next, decide on coat. Smooth coats and long coats are two varieties of one breed, and they can be bred together. However, a smooth dog may carry the long coat gene, so ask what he has produced.

Finally, watch the sales language. "Teacup" is not a real size, and "deer head" dogs differ from the apple-shaped skull in the standard. Also be cautious with merle. If you do use a merle, never pair him with another merle.

Chihuahua temperament and history

The AKC describes the Chihuahua as charming, graceful and sassy. The breed takes its name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, and it likely descends from the ancient Techichi dog.

Chihuahuas ranked 24th in AKC registrations for 2025. They are loyal, alert and long-lived, often reaching their mid teens. Because the puppies are so small, a healthy sire of the right size is essential.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Chihuahuas often mate naturally. Even so, when the male is much smaller than the female, artificial insemination by a vet is easier and safer. Chilled semen is practical too, since a tiny dog needs only a small dose. Each profile lists the methods the owner offers.

The dog artificial insemination guide covers the process. Afterwards, see how VerifiedStuds works.
