Yorkshire Terrier stud dogs with size and health details
A Yorkie may weigh only a few pounds, but picking his sire is no small job. Weight, coat texture and liver health all pass down the line. Therefore, VerifiedStuds lists those details on each stud profile, alongside an identity-verified owner.

Claim this spotYorkie stud fees usually land between $500 and $1,500. A health-checked male without show titles often charges $500 to $1,000. However, AKC champions and small, proven males with correct silky coats may ask $1,200 to $2,500.
These are market estimates, because owners set fees privately. Yorkie litters are small, typically two to four puppies. So check whether the contract includes a repeat breeding. Our stud fee guide lists the usual terms.
$500 to $1,500+
Overall range: $500 to $2,500
Health-checked, untitled male: $500 to $1,000
Champion or proven small sire: $1,200 to $2,500
The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America recommends two exams, and the AKC lists them on its Toy Group health testing page. Owners upload them for the Verified Health badge:
Test
What we accept
Patellas
Veterinary patellar luxation exam, registered with OFA
Eyes
Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO)
Brucellosis
Negative test taken before the breeding
Beyond knees and eyes, liver shunts are the problem Yorkie breeders fear most. A bile acid blood test can screen for them, so ask whether the stud or his puppies were tested. Collapsing trachea and Legg-Calve-Perthes hip disease also occur. Registered exam results appear on the OFA website.

First, check his weight. The standard sets a top limit of seven pounds, and most studs weigh four to six. Breeders normally choose a male that is smaller than the female, because that lowers the risk of a difficult birth.
Next, feel the coat. A correct Yorkie coat is fine, silky and straight, in steel blue and tan. Woolly or cottony coats are common in pet lines, and they are hard to breed out. So ask for clear photos in natural light.
Finally, be wary of sales words. "Teacup" is not a real size, and very tiny dogs often have more health problems. Parti-colored Yorkies can be AKC registered, but they fall outside the show standard. Either way, health should come first.
The AKC describes the Yorkshire Terrier as affectionate, sprightly and tomboyish. Workers in the mills and mines of northern England developed the breed in the 1800s to catch rats. Later it became a fashionable lap dog.
Yorkies ranked 13th in AKC registrations for 2025. They are brave, clever and long-lived for their size. Because puppies are so small at birth, a sound and healthy sire makes a real difference.
Yorkies can breed naturally. Even so, the size gap between a tiny male and a larger female often makes artificial insemination easier and safer. Many toy breeders therefore ask a vet to help. Chilled semen is available from some owners as well, and each profile says so.
