Health tests for English Cocker Spaniel stud dogs

The English Cocker Spaniel Club of America is the AKC parent club. Its recommended list is short and practical. A stud can carry our Verified Health badge when the owner uploads these results:

Test

What we accept

Hips

OFA hip evaluation or PennHIP

Patellas

Veterinary patellar luxation exam

prcd-PRA

DNA test for progressive retinal atrophy

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

In addition, many breeders test for familial nephropathy (FN) and adult-onset neuropathy (AON), and they add a yearly eye exam. Solid-colored dogs may also have a BAER hearing test. Registered results are public on the OFA website.

See our health testing guides for how each test works.

How to choose between English Cocker Spaniel stud dogs

First, decide between show and field type. Show-bred dogs are heavier in bone and coat. In contrast, field-bred dogs are lighter, faster and bred for work. The two lines rarely mix, so pick the type that matches your female.

Next, check the DNA results. Because prcd-PRA and FN are recessive, a carrier can be used safely on a clear female. Therefore, ask for the lab report and compare it with hers.

Finally, look at temperament. A good English Cocker is cheerful, biddable and never sharp. His tail should rarely stop moving.

English Cocker Spaniel temperament and background

The English Cocker was bred in Britain to flush woodcock, which gave the breed its name. The AKC recognized it as separate from the American Cocker Spaniel in 1946. It is taller, with a longer muzzle and less coat. The AKC describes it as energetic, merry and responsive.

At home, most are affectionate and easy to train. However, they need daily exercise and regular grooming. As a result, they suit active families best.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

English Cockers usually breed naturally without trouble. However, breeders often look abroad for new lines, so chilled and frozen semen are both common. Each profile lists the methods on offer.
