Brittany stud dogs that prove themselves in the field
Pound for pound, the Brittany may be the hardest-working bird dog in America. It is small enough for the truck seat and tough enough to hunt all day. Because ability matters so much, VerifiedStuds shows each stud's titles beside his health results and fee, from an identity-verified owner.

These are market estimates, since fees are private. Among bird hunters, a pick puppy is a common payment. For the details, read our stud fee guide.

The Brittany is a healthy breed overall. Even so, hip dysplasia and epilepsy both occur. Epilepsy has no screening test, so ask plainly about seizures in the stud's family. In addition, check that his ears and skin are clean, since allergies appear in some lines. Registered results are on the OFA website.
Our health testing guides explain hip grades and eye certificates.
First, look for dual quality. The Brittany has produced more AKC dual champions than any other sporting breed. So a sire with both field and show titles is not unusual, and he is worth seeking out.
Next, match his range. Some lines run wide for horseback trials, while others hunt close for a walking gunner. In addition, American and French types differ. The French dog is smaller, works closer and may be black, which is a disqualifying color in the AKC standard.
Finally, check size and nature. The standard asks for 17.5 to 20.5 inches and 30 to 40 pounds, in orange and white or liver and white. Brittanys are soft and eager, so a stud should respond happily to gentle handling.
The AKC describes the Brittany as bright, fun-loving and upbeat. The breed comes from the French province of Brittany, where poachers and peasants needed one dog that could point and retrieve. The AKC dropped the word Spaniel from the name in 1982, because the breed works like a pointer.
Brittanys have energy to spare and a strong wish to please. As a result, they also shine in agility and other dog sports. They suit active families who can give them daily running.
Brittanys breed naturally with no special help. However, the best field sires are scattered across the country, so chilled semen is used often. Frozen semen from past champions is also available. Each profile lists the methods the owner offers.
