English Springer Spaniel stud dogs from field and bench lines

English Springer Spaniel Stud Dogs

There are really two Springers. Field-bred dogs are lean, fast and built to flush birds all day. Bench-bred dogs are heavier, with longer coats for the show ring. So VerifiedStuds asks each owner to state the type, alongside titles, health results and fee.

What Springer Spaniel stud dogs cost

English Springer stud fees usually fall between $500 and $1,200. A health-tested gun dog or companion male often charges $500 to $1,000. However, field champions, Master Hunters and AKC show champions commonly ask $1,500 to $2,500.

These are market estimates, because fees are private. In hunting circles, a pick puppy is often accepted in place of cash. For the pros and cons, read our stud fee guide.

Health tests for Springer Spaniel stud dogs

The English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association, the AKC parent club, sets four tests for a CHIC number. The AKC lists them on its Sporting Group health testing page. Owners upload these results for the Verified Health badge:

Test

What we accept

Hips

OFA hip evaluation or PennHIP

Elbows

OFA elbow evaluation

Eyes

Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO), repeated yearly

PRA cord1

Progressive Retinal Atrophy DNA test

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

In addition, many breeders run a DNA test for PFK deficiency, a blood disorder that causes weakness after hard exercise. Ear infections are common because of the long ears, so ask about chronic ear trouble. Also ask about temperament in the family, since steadiness matters greatly in this breed. Registered results are on the OFA website.

Our health testing guides explain hips, elbows, eyes and DNA results in plain words.

How to choose between Springer Spaniel stud dogs

First, choose the type. Field and bench Springers have been bred apart for decades, and they rarely cross. A field sire suits hunters and very active homes. A bench sire, on the other hand, suits show homes and families who want a steadier pace.

Next, look for proof. For a field dog, that means trial placements, hunt test titles or honest video of him working birds. For a bench dog, it means show titles and correct structure. Either way, ask to see his adult offspring.

Finally, weigh temperament. A good Springer is cheerful, biddable and gentle. Therefore, meet the stud if you can, and ask how he behaves with children, visitors and other dogs.

English Springer Spaniel temperament and history

The AKC describes the English Springer Spaniel as friendly, playful and obedient. The breed takes its name from the way it springs game into the air for the hunter. Males stand about 20 inches tall and weigh around 50 pounds.

Springers ranked 27th in AKC registrations for 2025. They are affectionate, eager to please and happiest with a job. As a result, they make fine family dogs for people who enjoy the outdoors.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Springers breed naturally with little fuss. However, good field sires are often several states apart, so chilled semen is common. Frozen semen is also stored from top trial dogs, including British imports. Each profile lists the methods the owner offers.

Springer Spaniel stud service FAQ

How much is a Springer Spaniel stud fee?

Most owners charge $500 to $1,200. However, field champions and show champions can ask up to $2,500.

What health tests should a Springer stud have?

The parent club list covers hips, elbows, a yearly eye exam and the PRA cord1 DNA test. We also require a negative brucellosis test.

What is the difference between field and bench Springers?

Field Springers are lighter, faster and bred for hunting. Bench Springers are bred for the show ring, with heavier bone and more coat.

What is PFK deficiency?

It is an inherited enzyme disorder that affects red blood cells and muscles. A DNA test identifies carriers, so two carriers are not paired.
