Westie stud dogs with skin and health history

West Highland White Terrier Stud Dogs

The Westie is a tough little Scottish terrier in a bright white coat. Unfortunately, itchy skin is so common in the breed that many owners think it is normal. It is not, and careful sire selection helps. So VerifiedStuds shows each stud's health tests, skin history and fee.

What Westie stud dogs cost

West Highland White Terrier stud fees usually run from $400 to $1,200. A health-tested male without titles often charges $400 to $900. However, AKC champions and proven sires from show lines commonly ask $1,200 to $2,000.

These are market estimates, since fees are private. A stud with clear skin at five or six years old is worth more than a young one, because allergies often appear by age three. Our stud fee guide explains fee terms.

Health tests for Westie stud dogs

The West Highland White Terrier Club of America sets four tests, which the AKC lists on its Terrier Group health testing page. Owners upload these results for the Verified Health badge:

Test

What we accept

Patellas

Veterinary patellar luxation exam, registered with OFA

Hips

OFA hip evaluation, which also screens for Legg-Calve-Perthes

Eyes

Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO)

CMO

Craniomandibular Osteopathy DNA test

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

CMO, sometimes called lion jaw, causes painful swelling of the jaw in puppies, and a DNA test finds carriers. Skin allergy, however, has no test. Therefore, ask whether the stud, his parents or his puppies need regular treatment for itching. A lung disease known as Westie lung also appears in older dogs. Registered results are on the OFA website.

Our health testing guides explain patella, hip and eye exams.

How to choose between Westie stud dogs

First, look at his skin and coat. Part the hair on his belly, armpits and feet, or ask for close photos. The skin should be pale and clean, not red, dark or greasy. In addition, a correct coat is hard and straight, about two inches long, with a soft undercoat.

Next, check size and shape. Males should stand about 11 inches at the shoulder and weigh 15 to 20 pounds. The body is compact, with a level back and a carrot-shaped tail carried upright. So avoid long, low or fine-boned dogs.

Finally, expect terrier spirit. A Westie should be bold, cheerful and self-assured, yet friendly. Also ask his age, since an older stud with clear skin and sound lungs has already proved a great deal.

Westie temperament and history

The AKC describes the West Highland White Terrier as loyal, happy and entertaining. The breed comes from the west of Scotland, where it hunted foxes, badgers and rats among the rocks. White dogs were favored because they were easy to tell apart from the quarry.

Westies are sturdy, clever and independent. They fit well into city or country life. Because skin disease affects so many of them, a healthy sire makes a real difference to buyers.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Westies breed naturally as a rule. Still, chilled semen lets you reach a sire with proven healthy skin, even in another state. Frozen semen is offered by some show kennels too. Each profile lists the methods the owner offers.

Most owners charge $400 to $1,200. However, champions and proven show-line sires can ask up to $2,000.

What health tests should a Westie stud have?

The parent club list covers patellas, hips, eyes and the CMO DNA test. We also require a negative brucellosis test.

Can skin allergies in Westies be tested for?

No DNA test exists yet. Therefore, the best guide is the skin history of the stud, his relatives and his puppies.

What is CMO or lion jaw?

Craniomandibular osteopathy is an inherited bone disease that swells the jaw of growing puppies. A DNA test identifies carriers.
