Dalmatian stud dogs with hearing tests on file

Dalmatian Stud Dogs

Everyone knows the spots. Fewer people know that the genes behind them are linked to deafness, or that the breed has a unique problem with bladder stones. So a Dalmatian sire needs more than good looks. VerifiedStuds shows each stud's hearing result, health tests and fee.

What Dalmatian stud dogs cost

Dalmatian stud fees usually run from $500 to $1,500. A health-tested male without titles often charges $500 to $1,000. However, AKC champions and proven sires with strong hearing records behind them commonly ask $1,500 to $2,500.

These are market estimates, as fees are private. Litters are often large, so per-puppy fees are common. Our stud fee guide compares them with flat fees.

Negative test taken before the breeding

Research suggests that roughly eight percent of Dalmatians are deaf in both ears, and about one in five is deaf in one ear. Therefore, breeders prefer sires that hear in both ears. In addition, nearly all Dalmatians carry a gene that raises uric acid and can cause bladder stones, mostly in males. Registered results are on the OFA website.

Our health testing guides explain BAER, hips and DNA tests in simple terms.

How to choose between Dalmatian stud dogs

First, check hearing in the family. Ask for the BAER results of the stud, his parents and his previous litters. Dogs with a colored patch on the head are less likely to be deaf, although a patch is a show fault. Blue eyes, in contrast, are linked to a higher risk.

Next, ask about uric acid. Traditional Dalmatians all have high uric acid. However, a line known as LUA, or low uric acid, carries the normal gene and has been AKC registered since 2011. A DNA test shows which kind a stud is.

Finally, look at spotting and build. Spots should be round, well defined and black or liver. The dog should stand 19 to 24 inches and move with an easy, tireless stride. Also expect a friendly, steady temperament.

Dalmatian temperament and history

The AKC describes the Dalmatian as dignified, smart and outgoing. The breed made its name as a coach dog, trotting beside horse-drawn carriages and guarding them at night. Later it became the mascot of fire stations.

Puppies are born pure white, and the spots appear within weeks. Dalmatians have great stamina and need daily exercise. As a result, they suit runners and active families best.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Dalmatians breed naturally with ease. Still, chilled semen is useful when a sire with the right hearing record and pedigree lives far away. Frozen semen is stored by many show kennels as well. Each profile lists the methods on offer.
