Whippet stud dogs from show, coursing and racing lines

Whippet Stud Dogs

The Whippet is the fastest dog of its size, and one of the gentlest at home. Breeders compete with these dogs in the show ring, on the lure coursing field and on the race track. So VerifiedStuds asks each stud owner to list titles, health tests and fee, and every owner is identity verified.

What Whippet stud dogs cost

Whippet stud fees usually run from $500 to $1,500. A health-tested male without titles often charges $500 to $1,000. However, AKC champions, top lure coursers and proven racing sires commonly ask $1,500 to $2,500.

These are market estimates, because fees are private. Among sighthound breeders, a puppy back is a common alternative to cash. Our stud fee guide explains both arrangements.

Health tests for Whippet stud dogs

The American Whippet Club sets three tests for a CHIC number, and the AKC lists them on its Hound Group health testing page. Owners upload these results for the Verified Health badge:

Test

What we accept

Heart

Cardiac exam, ideally by a cardiologist with an echocardiogram

Eyes

Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO)

Hearing

BAER test

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

Heart valve disease is the main concern as Whippets age, so the cardiac exam is best repeated every year or two. In addition, a DNA test exists for the myostatin gene. One copy can make a dog faster, but two copies produce the heavily muscled bully Whippet. Registered results are on the OFA website.

Our health testing guides explain heart, eye and hearing tests.

How to choose between Whippet stud dogs

First, measure him. The AKC standard sets males at 19 to 22 inches, and a dog more than half an inch outside the limits is disqualified. Therefore, show breeders prize sires that reliably produce correct size.

Next, decide what the litter is for. Show lines emphasize outline and smooth movement. Racing and coursing lines, in contrast, emphasize speed and drive. Many dogs do both, and titles at both ends of the name are a strong sign.

Finally, ask about the myostatin test and the heart. Two carriers of the myostatin gene should not be paired. Also ask how old his parents were when any murmur was first heard. Temperament should be gentle and friendly.

Whippet temperament and history

The AKC describes the Whippet as affectionate, playful and calm. Coal miners in northern England bred these small greyhounds for rabbit coursing and weekend races. People called the breed the poor man's racehorse.

Whippets can reach about 35 miles per hour, yet they spend most of the day asleep on the sofa. They are clean, quiet and gentle with children. As a result, they make easy companions for homes with a safe place to run.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Whippets mate naturally with no fuss. However, the right sire for a show or performance litter is often across the country, so chilled semen is widely used. Frozen semen from past winners is common as well. Each profile lists the methods on offer.

Whippet stud service FAQ

How much is a Whippet stud fee?

Most owners charge $500 to $1,500. However, champions and top performance sires can ask up to $2,500.

What health tests should a Whippet stud have?

The parent club list covers the heart, eyes and a BAER hearing test. We also require a negative brucellosis test.

What is a bully Whippet?

It is a Whippet with two copies of a myostatin gene mutation, which causes extreme muscle. A DNA test finds carriers, so breeders can avoid it.

Are racing Whippets different from show Whippets?

They are the same breed, but racing lines are bred mainly for speed. As a result, they may differ in size and outline.

Can other sighthounds be listed?

Yes. Every breed is welcome on VerifiedStuds.
