Beagle stud dogs from field and show lines

Beagle Stud Dogs

Some Beagles are bred to run rabbits all day. Others are bred for the show ring or the sofa. Because those lines differ so much, VerifiedStuds asks every stud owner to state the line, the size variety and the health results. Each owner is also identity verified.

What Beagle stud dogs cost

Beagle stud fees are among the most affordable, usually $300 to $1,000. A health-tested hunting or companion male often charges $300 to $700. However, field champions and AKC show champions commonly ask $1,000 to $2,000.

These are market estimates, since stud prices are private. Among hunters, a puppy from the litter is a common payment instead of cash. Our stud fee guide explains how to put either deal in writing.

Health tests for Beagle stud dogs

The National Beagle Club of America sets the list for a CHIC number. The AKC also publishes it on its Hound Group health testing page. Owners upload these results for the Verified Health badge:

Test

What we accept

Hips

OFA hip evaluation or PennHIP

Heart

Cardiac exam registered with OFA

Eyes

Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO)

Thyroid

OFA thyroid panel from an approved lab

MLS

Musladin-Lueke Syndrome DNA test

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

MLS is an inherited disorder that leaves puppies with stiff joints and tight skin, so the DNA test matters. In addition, many breeders test for Factor VII deficiency, NCCD and IGS. Epilepsy has no DNA test yet, so ask about seizures in the family. You can check registered results on the OFA website.

For a quick introduction to OFA exams and DNA panels, read our health testing guides. Read the full Beagle health testing guide.

How to choose between Beagle stud dogs

First, decide what the puppies are for. Field-bred Beagles have more drive, more voice and often a rangier build. Show and companion lines are usually calmer and more uniform. So pick a sire whose line fits the homes you have in mind.

Next, check the size. The AKC recognizes two varieties: hounds under 13 inches, and hounds from 13 to 15 inches. A male over 15 inches cannot be shown. Likewise, "pocket Beagle" is a sales term, not a recognized variety.

Finally, ask for proof. For a hunting sire, that means field trial placements or honest video of him on rabbits. For a show sire, it means titles and a sound, level build. In both cases, also ask about his nose, his voice and his temperament in the pack.

Beagle temperament and history

The AKC describes the Beagle as friendly, curious and merry. English hunters bred these small pack hounds to trail rabbits and hares on foot. As a result, Beagles are sociable, vocal and led by their noses.

The Beagle ranked 7th in AKC registrations for 2025. It is sturdy, good with children and happy in a group. However, that popularity means many untested litters, so a health-tested sire stands out.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Beagles are easy natural breeders, and most matings happen that way. Still, chilled semen is useful when a proven field or show sire lives far away. Frozen semen is rare in the breed, although some champion lines offer it. Each profile lists the available methods.

How much is a Beagle stud fee?

Most fees fall between $300 and $1,000. However, field champions and show champions can charge up to $2,000.

What health tests should a Beagle stud have?

The parent club list covers hips, heart, eyes, thyroid and the MLS DNA test. We also require a negative brucellosis test before breeding.

What is the difference between 13 and 15 inch Beagles?

They are two height varieties of the same breed. The smaller is under 13 inches at the shoulder, and the larger is 13 to 15 inches.

Are field Beagles different from show Beagles?

Yes. Field lines are bred for hunting drive and stamina, while show lines are bred to the written standard. Therefore, their energy levels can differ a lot.
