Pembroke Welsh Corgi Stud Dogs

Short legs, big ears and a bigger personality have made the Pembroke hugely popular. Unfortunately, that demand also attracts careless breeding. So VerifiedStuds helps you compare Corgi stud dogs by DNA results, hips, eyes and fee, with every owner identity verified.

What Corgi stud dogs cost

Pembroke stud fees usually range from $500 to $1,500. A health-tested male without titles often charges $500 to $1,000. Meanwhile, AKC champions and proven sires from show lines tend to ask $1,200 to $2,500.

Because fees are private, these are market estimates. Unusual colors are often priced high, yet they are no sign of quality. Our stud fee guide explains what a fair agreement includes.

Health tests for Corgi stud dogs

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America asks for two evaluations, which the AKC lists on its Herding Group health testing page. Owners upload them for the Verified Health badge:

DNA results matter in this breed as well. Degenerative myelopathy (DM) is widespread in Pembrokes, so breeders use the test to avoid pairing two at-risk dogs where they can. In addition, tests for von Willebrand disease and exercise-induced collapse are common. Registered results can be checked on the OFA website.

How to choose between Corgi stud dogs

First, compare DNA results. A female that carries DM is best matched with a clear male, if one of good quality is available. The same logic applies to vWD and EIC. So ask for the lab reports, not just a summary.

Next, be careful with color. Pembrokes come in red, sable, fawn and tricolor, with white markings. Merle does not exist in the purebred Pembroke. Therefore, a "merle Pembroke" has another breed behind it, usually the Cardigan. Likewise, long "fluffy" coats are a fault, though the gene can be tested.

Finally, look at structure. A level topline, strong bone and free movement help protect that long back. Also ask about his temperament, since a good Pembroke is bold and friendly, never shy.

Pembroke temperament and history

The AKC describes the Pembroke Welsh Corgi as affectionate, smart and alert. The breed drove cattle in Pembrokeshire, Wales, by nipping at their heels. Later, Queen Elizabeth II made it famous around the world.

Pembrokes stand 10 to 12 inches tall, and males weigh up to 30 pounds. The breed ranked 16th in AKC registrations for 2025. Because it is so popular, a tested sire with honest paperwork is worth seeking out.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Corgis generally mate naturally, although the long back and short legs can make it clumsy. Therefore, some owners prefer artificial insemination. Chilled semen is also a sensible way to reach a well-tested sire in another state. Each profile lists what the owner offers.

See the dog artificial insemination guide for the process. Then read how VerifiedStuds works.

Pembroke stud service FAQ

How much is a Corgi stud fee?

Most owners charge $500 to $1,500. However, champions and proven show-line sires can ask up to $2,500.

What health tests should a Corgi stud have?

The parent club asks for hip and eye evaluations. Breeders also use DNA tests for DM, vWD and EIC. We require a negative brucellosis test as well.

Should I avoid a stud that carries DM?

Not always. Because the gene is so common, removing every carrier would shrink the gene pool. Instead, breeders pair carriers with clear dogs. Ask your vet for advice.

Are merle Pembroke Corgis purebred?

No. Merle comes from another breed, usually the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. So such puppies are crosses, whatever the advert says.

Can Cardigans and other breeds be listed?

Yes. Any breed is welcome on VerifiedStuds.
