Health-tested Shar-Pei stud dogs from verified owners
The wrinkles, the sandpaper coat and the blue-black tongue make this ancient Chinese breed impossible to mistake. However, the same gene that makes the wrinkles is tied to a serious fever disorder. On VerifiedStuds, every owner is identity verified, and each profile shows health results beside the fee.

Claim this spotShar-Pei stud fees usually run from $800 to $2,000. A health-tested male with no proven litters often asks $800 to $1,200. However, champions and proven sires from healthy, long-lived lines can ask $1,500 to $2,500.
These are market estimates, since fees are private. Rare colors raise prices as well, although color says nothing about health. The stud fee guide explains contracts and return services.

Shar-Pei fever, now called SPAID, causes bouts of high temperature and swollen hocks. Over time it can lead to amyloidosis, which damages the kidneys. The condition is linked to the same genetic change that produces the thick, wrinkled skin.
Therefore, ask direct questions. Has the stud ever had a fever episode or swollen hocks? How long did his parents live, and what did they die of? A sire from a family free of fevers and early kidney failure is the safest choice.
First, look at his eyes. Entropion, where the lids roll inward, is common, and many puppies need their lids tacked. So prefer a male whose eyes are open and comfortable without surgery.
Next, consider type. Heavily wrinkled "meat mouth" dogs are popular, yet moderate dogs tend to have fewer skin, ear and eye problems. The standard accepts horse coat and brush coat. However, the long bear coat is a fault in the show ring.
Finally, judge temperament. The AKC describes the breed as loyal, independent and calm. It is reserved with strangers, so a sire should be steady and never fearful.
Shar-Pei usually breed naturally. However, some males need help, so artificial insemination is common. Chilled semen is used as well, because healthy lines are worth travelling for. Each profile lists the methods on offer.
The dog artificial insemination guide explains timing and shipping. Then see how VerifiedStuds works.

Most owners charge $800 to $2,000. However, champions and proven sires can ask up to $2,500. These figures are estimates.
What health tests should a Shar-Pei stud have?
Hips, elbows, patellas, an eye exam and a thyroid evaluation, plus a recent negative brucellosis test.
What is Shar-Pei fever?
It is an inherited disorder that causes fever and swollen hocks. In some dogs it leads to kidney failure from amyloidosis.
Do all Shar-Pei need eyelid surgery?
No. Many do have entropion, but well-bred dogs with moderate wrinkling often need no surgery.
What is the difference between horse coat and brush coat?
Horse coat is very short and harsh. Brush coat is a little longer and softer. Both are accepted in the standard.
