Canine Artificial Insemination: A Breeder's Guide

Canine artificial insemination (AI) lets you breed to a stud across the country without moving either dog, and it is the normal method for French and English Bulldogs. This VerifiedStuds guide covers the three types of semen, how to time the breeding, and what the AKC needs to register the litter.

Semen for canine artificial insemination: fresh, chilled and frozen

Semen type

How it works and timing

AKC rules

Fresh

Collected and inseminated the same day, with both dogs present. Days 3 to 6 after progesterone first rises, usually two inseminations.

No vet required; no DNA required

Chilled (fresh extended)

Extended after collection and shipped overnight; use within about 48 hours. Days 3 and 5, or 4 and 6.

Sire must be AKC DNA certified

Frozen

Stored in liquid nitrogen, then thawed at insemination. Day 5 or 6, usually once.

Licensed vet must inseminate; DNA required

Timing the breeding with progesterone

Your vet measures the female's blood progesterone every day or two once her season starts. The day it first rises above baseline is day zero. Then the female releases eggs 2 to 3 days after the LH surge. After that, the eggs need another 2 to 3 days to mature, and they stay fertile for about 2 to 3 days more. Therefore, frozen semen, which lives the shortest time, goes in late in the window.

Canine artificial insemination methods

Vaginal (TVI): the vet or breeder places semen deep in the vagina with a pipette. This simple method is also common with fresh and chilled semen.

Transcervical (TCI): a vet passes a catheter through the cervix into the uterus, guided by an endoscope. Because it needs no anesthesia, vets prefer it for frozen semen.

Surgical: the vet places semen in the uterus during surgery. Although it works, it needs anesthesia, so most vets reserve it for cases where TCI is not possible.

Registering an AI litter with the AKC

The AKC has a separate litter application for each semen type. For example, chilled-semen litters need an AKC DNA-certified sire. Frozen-semen litters need a licensed vet to do the insemination, a DNA-certified sire and a frozen semen collection statement. Therefore, ask the stud owner for the paperwork before you book.

Booking a stud for AI on VerifiedStuds

Filter any breed page by semen type to find studs that ship chilled or frozen semen. Each profile shows what the fee includes, such as collection, shipping container and AKC DNA status. Also agree on shipping dates in messages before you book, since timing is tight.

Dog AI FAQ

How long does chilled dog semen last?

Vets usually inseminate it within about 48 hours of collection, so it ships overnight.

Is AI as successful as natural breeding?

With good progesterone timing, fresh and chilled AI can come close. However, frozen semen needs more precise timing and usually a transcervical insemination.

Does a vet have to perform AI?

For frozen semen, the AKC requires a licensed vet. However, an experienced breeder can do fresh and chilled AI, though many use a vet.

Can I register an AI litter with the AKC?

Yes, using the application for the semen type. In addition, chilled and frozen litters need a DNA-certified sire.

When should frozen semen be inseminated?

Around day 5 or 6 after progesterone first rises, once the eggs have matured.
