What a Labrador Retriever stud fee costs

Labrador stud fees commonly run from about $500 to $1,500, while field champions and proven hunt test producers can go above that. In addition, some owners take pick of the litter in place of part of the fee. The stud fee guide explains the usual terms.

What we accept

Hips

OFA hip evaluation or PennHIP

Elbows

OFA elbow evaluation

Eyes

Eye exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (CAER)

DNA

Exercise-Induced Collapse (EIC), Centronuclear Myopathy (CNM), prcd-PRA and D locus (dilute)

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

Recommended and shown on the profile when present: cardiac exam, Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis (HNPK) and Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) DNA. A Lab that is a carrier for a DNA condition can still be a good stud when paired with a clear female, and the profile shows each result so you can plan the pairing. In addition, you can look up any registered result on the OFA website.

Field, show and service lines

Labs are bred for hunting and field trials, the show ring, and service and family work. Therefore, owners tag each stud's line and titles, such as FC, AFC, MH or CH, so you can match a stud to your goals.

Labrador Retriever stud FAQ

How much does a Labrador stud cost?

Most Lab stud fees fall between $500 and $1,500. However, field champions and titled studs cost more.

What health tests should a Labrador stud have?

OFA hips, elbows and eyes, DNA for EIC, CNM, prcd-PRA and the dilute gene, and a recent negative Brucellosis test.

What is EIC in Labradors?

Exercise-Induced Collapse is an inherited condition that causes weakness and collapse after intense exercise. A DNA test shows whether a dog is clear, a carrier or affected.

Can a carrier Lab be used at stud?

Yes, if the female tests clear for the same condition. As a result, puppies from that pairing will not be affected.

Do you list field-bred Labs?

Yes. Owners can tag field, show or service lines and also list hunt test and field trial titles.

Does VerifiedStuds guarantee a litter?

No. We verify owner identity and health documents, but conception depends on both dogs. Any return service comes from the stud owner's terms.
