How do dogs mate? A plain guide for first-time breeders

How Do Dogs Mate? The Tie, Timing and What to Expect

A first breeding can be nerve-racking for the owners, even when the dogs know exactly what to do. Understanding each step keeps everyone calm and safe. This VerifiedStuds guide explains the mating, the tie and the simple rules that prevent injuries.

How do dogs mate? The three stages

First comes courtship. The dogs sniff, play and circle. A female in full heat stands still and moves her tail aside, which breeders call flagging. If she sits, snaps or runs, she is probably not ready.

Next, the male mounts and enters. Within a minute or so, a gland at the base of his penis swells inside the female. Her muscles tighten around it. This locks the pair together, and it is called the tie.

Finally, the male usually steps one leg over and turns, so the dogs stand tail to tail. They stay joined until the swelling goes down. Most of the sperm-rich fluid is delivered early, while the tie itself helps carry it forward.

How long the tie lasts

A tie usually lasts 10 to 30 minutes. However, anything from 5 minutes to nearly an hour can be normal. The length does not predict the size of the litter.

Situation

What to do

Normal tie

Hold both dogs gently and keep them calm until they part

Female tries to sit or roll

Support her under the belly, and speak quietly

Tie lasts over an hour

Stay calm, and phone your vet for advice

Dogs part quickly, with no tie

Note it as a slip mating, and try again in a day or two

Never pull tied dogs apart. Forcing them can injure both animals badly. Likewise, do not use cold water or shouting. They will separate on their own.

Slip matings: can she still get pregnant?

A slip mating is one where the male enters but no tie forms. Pregnancy is still possible, because sperm are released before the tie. Even so, the odds are lower. Therefore, most breeders repeat the mating 24 to 48 hours later.

Slips happen for many reasons: a nervous young male, a size mismatch, a slippery floor or simply poor timing. Give the dogs a rest, improve the footing and try again.

How do dogs mate successfully? Timing and frequency

Timing matters far more than the number of matings. VCA Animal Hospitals advise two matings, 24 to 48 hours apart, during her fertile days. Those days fall two to four days after ovulation. Read when to breed a dog in heat and progesterone testing for dogs.

More is not better. A male used every day delivers fewer sperm each time. So breeding every other day protects both the result and the dog. See how often a stud dog can breed.

Stud visit etiquette

Test first. Both dogs should have a recent negative brucellosis test, because the disease spreads through mating. See brucellosis in dogs.

Agree terms in writing. Settle the fee, repeat breedings and paperwork before the dogs meet. The stud fee guide explains the usual terms.

Bring the female to the male. Males are more confident at home.

Keep it quiet. Two calm handlers, a non-slip surface and no audience work best.

Walk her on a lead afterwards. Keep her from urinating for a few minutes, and keep her away from other males for the rest of her heat.

When artificial insemination is the better choice

Natural mating is not always possible or safe. For example, French Bulldogs and English Bulldogs are usually bred by artificial insemination because of their build. In addition, AI suits dogs that live far apart, big size differences, and males or females that will not cooperate.

AI also lowers the risk of injury and infection. Our dog artificial insemination guide explains fresh, chilled and frozen semen. Ready to choose a sire? Then find a health-tested stud, or list your stud free.

How do dogs mate: FAQ

How long do dogs stay stuck together?

Usually 10 to 30 minutes. A tie of 5 minutes or nearly an hour can also be normal.

Does a longer tie mean more puppies?

No. Litter size depends on timing, the female's eggs and the male's semen quality, not on the length of the tie.

Can a dog get pregnant without a tie?

Yes. A slip mating can still result in pregnancy, although the chance is lower. Most breeders repeat it.

How many times should dogs mate?

Twice, about 48 hours apart, is the usual advice. Good timing matters more than extra matings.

Is mating painful for dogs?

A normal mating is not painful. However, a frightened or maiden female may cry out, so calm handling matters.
