German Shorthaired Pointer stud dogs with proven field ability
A Shorthair should point, retrieve and track, on land and in water. Therefore, hunters want a sire that has proved it in tests or trials. VerifiedStuds shows each stud's titles, health clearances and fee on one profile, with an identity-verified owner behind it.

Claim this spotStud fees for Shorthairs generally run from $500 to $1,500. A health-tested hunting dog without titles often charges $500 to $1,000. However, field champions, Master Hunters, NAVHDA Versatile Champions and dual champions usually ask $1,200 to $2,500.
Treat these as market estimates, because fees are agreed privately. Hunters also swap a pick puppy for the service fairly often. For the pros and cons of each deal, read our stud fee guide.

Cone degeneration causes day blindness, and the DNA test easily identifies carriers. Many breeders also test for lupoid dermatosis, a severe skin disease in the breed. In addition, ask about bloat in the family, since deep-chested dogs are at risk. Registered clearances can be searched on the OFA website.
If hip scores and DNA terms are unfamiliar, start with our health testing guides. Read the full German Shorthaired Pointer health testing guide.
First, read the titles. AKC hunt tests award Junior, Senior and Master Hunter. Field trials award Field Champion and Amateur Field Champion. NAVHDA, meanwhile, scores natural ability and utility on land and water. Each system proves something slightly different.
Next, match the range and pace. Horseback trial lines run big and fast, which suits open country. Foot-hunting lines work closer and check in more often. So think about how your puppy buyers hunt, and then choose the sire to fit.
Finally, consider life at home. A good Shorthair is biddable and steady in the house as well as bold in the field. Therefore, ask the owner how the dog behaves indoors, and whether his pups have been easy to train.
The AKC describes the German Shorthaired Pointer as friendly, smart and willing to please. German hunters created the breed in the 1800s as an all-purpose gun dog. Males stand 23 to 25 inches tall and weigh 55 to 70 pounds.
The breed ranked 9th in AKC registrations for 2025. It is athletic, affectionate and full of energy. Because these dogs need real exercise, good breeders place puppies carefully and choose sound, sensible sires.
Shorthairs breed naturally with little trouble. However, the top field sires are spread across the country, so chilled semen is very common. Frozen semen is popular too, because it keeps great trial dogs available for years. Each profile lists the methods and the collection fees.
