Pug stud dogs chosen for health as well as charm

Pug Stud Dogs

A lot of dog in a small space: that is the Pug's motto. Sadly, the flat face and curled tail that people love also bring breathing and spine problems. So the best sires are the ones that breathe quietly and move freely. VerifiedStuds shows those details, plus test results and fee.

Health tests for Pug stud dogs

The Pug Dog Club of America sets four tests, which the AKC lists on its Toy Group health testing page. Owners upload these results for the Verified Health badge:

Test

What we accept

PDE

Pug Dog Encephalitis DNA test

Hips

OFA hip evaluation

Eyes

Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO)

Patellas

Veterinary patellar luxation exam, registered with OFA

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE) is a fatal brain disease, and the DNA test shows a dog's risk level. Therefore, two high-risk dogs should not be paired. Many breeders also X-ray the spine for malformed vertebrae and test for PK deficiency. Above all, ask how he copes with heat and exercise. Registered results are on the OFA website.

See our health testing guides for simple explanations of these tests.

How to choose between Pug stud dogs

First, listen to him. A healthy Pug breathes quietly at rest and recovers fast after a short walk. Wide, open nostrils are a good sign. In contrast, constant snorting, gagging or collapse in warm weather point to airway disease that he may pass on.

Next, look at his eyes and skin. The eyes should not bulge, and the nose roll should not rub them. Deep skin folds trap moisture and cause infections. So moderate features are better than extreme ones.

Finally, check structure and color. The standard asks for a square, cobby dog of 14 to 18 pounds with a tightly curled tail. Only fawn and black are accepted. Brindle, white and merle are sold as rare, but they suggest another breed in the background.

Pug temperament and history

The AKC describes the Pug as charming, mischievous and loving. The breed began as a companion to Chinese emperors more than 2,000 years ago. Dutch traders later brought it to Europe, where it charmed royal courts.

Pugs live to please their people and get along with almost everyone. However, their health depends heavily on how they are bred. As a result, a moderate, well-tested sire is the kindest choice for the puppies.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Many Pugs are bred by artificial insemination. The compact build makes natural mating tiring, and a short-faced dog can overheat quickly. For that reason, breeders often work with a vet. Chilled semen is widely offered too, and each profile lists the methods.

Our dog artificial insemination guide covers the process. Then see how VerifiedStuds works.
