Health-tested American Staffordshire Terrier stud dogs

American Staffordshire Terrier Stud Dogs

Stocky, muscular and famously fond of people, the AmStaff is the AKC's bull-and-terrier breed. Its parent club lists four health tests, and one of them prevents a serious nerve disease. On VerifiedStuds, every owner is identity verified, and each profile shows health results beside the fee.

What American Staffordshire Terrier stud dogs cost

AmStaff stud fees usually run from $800 to $2,000. A health-tested male with no proven litters often asks $800 to $1,200. However, AKC champions and proven producers can ask $1,500 to $2,500.

These are market estimates, since fees are private. Show wins and a full set of clearances both raise the price. The stud fee guide explains contracts and return services.

Health tests for American Staffordshire Terrier stud dogs

The Staffordshire Terrier Club of America is the AKC parent club. A stud can carry our Verified Health badge when the owner uploads the results on its recommended list:

Test

What we accept

Hips

OFA hip evaluation or PennHIP

Heart

Cardiac exam registered with OFA

Thyroid

OFA thyroid evaluation

NCL4A

DNA test for cerebellar ataxia

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

NCL4A, often called cerebellar ataxia, causes loss of balance in adult dogs. Because it is recessive, testing both parents prevents affected puppies. In addition, many owners add elbows and an eye exam. Registered results are public on the OFA website.

See our health testing guides for how each test works.

How to choose between American Staffordshire Terrier stud dogs

First, compare him with the standard. Males stand 18 to 19 inches and should look powerful yet agile, never heavy or clumsy. Therefore, a very wide, low dog is outside the breed type.

Next, ask about skin and allergies. Skin trouble is common in the breed, and it often runs in families. So look at his coat, and ask how his relatives have fared.

Finally, put temperament first. The AKC describes the breed as confident, smart and good-natured. A sire should be steady with people and under control around other dogs.

American Staffordshire Terrier temperament and background

The AKC recognized the breed in 1936 as the Staffordshire Terrier, and the name changed to American Staffordshire Terrier in 1972. It shares its roots with the American Pit Bull Terrier, which the UKC registers. Since then, the two have been bred to different standards.

At home, AmStaffs are loyal, playful and keen to please. However, some cities and insurers restrict bull breeds. As a result, check local rules before you plan a litter.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

AmStaffs usually breed naturally without help. However, show breeders often use chilled or frozen semen to reach dogs in other states and countries. Each profile lists the methods on offer.
