Maltipoo stud dogs with knee checks and coat DNA

Maltipoo Stud Dogs

Tiny, bright and devoted to its people, this mix of Maltese and Toy or Miniature Poodle suits apartment life well. It is a cross, not an AKC breed, so quality varies widely. Therefore, health tests and coat DNA matter even more. VerifiedStuds shows both on each stud profile, beside the fee.

What Maltipoo stud dogs cost

Maltipoo stud fees usually run from $500 to $1,500. A health-tested male with no proven litters often charges $500 to $900. However, small, proven sires with tested coat genes and popular colors can ask $1,000 to $2,000.

These are market estimates, since fees are private. Many breeders also use a purebred Poodle as the sire. So compare our Poodle stud page and Maltese stud page too. The stud fee guide explains contracts and return services.

Health tests for Maltipoo stud dogs

Because the Maltipoo is a cross, it has no AKC parent club and no CHIC list. So a careful stud owner covers the risks of both parent breeds. We suggest these results:

Test

What we accept

Patellas

Veterinary patellar luxation exam

Eyes

Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO)

Heart

Cardiac exam registered with OFA

DNA panel

prcd-PRA and other toy breed markers, plus coat genes

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

Loose kneecaps are the most common inherited fault in both parent breeds. The Poodle side also brings progressive retinal atrophy, while the Maltese side adds a risk of liver shunts and heart defects. Therefore, many breeders add a bile acid blood test. Registered results are on the OFA website.

See our OFA patella evaluation guide and Poodle health testing guide for more detail.

How to choose between Maltipoo stud dogs

First, ask for his adult weight. Maltipoos range from about 5 to 20 pounds, depending on the Poodle parent. A very tiny male on a tiny female raises the risk of a difficult birth. So a sound male of moderate size is often the safer choice.

Next, learn the generation labels. An F1 is a first cross of Maltese and Poodle. An F1b is an F1 bred back to a Poodle. Multigen means both parents are Maltipoos.

Finally, ask for coat DNA. Both parent breeds shed little, yet coat texture still varies from silky to curly. In addition, check his bite and his knees when you meet him.

Maltipoo temperament and background

The cross has been bred in the United States since the 1990s as a small, low-shedding companion. "Teacup" is a sales word, not a variety, and very small dogs carry more health risk. The cross is not recognized by the AKC, and results vary from dog to dog.

At their best, Maltipoos are gentle, playful and quick to learn. However, no dog is truly allergy free. As a result, honest breeders test coats and health, and they explain the limits to buyers.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Maltipoos of similar size breed naturally. However, small dogs sometimes need help, so artificial insemination is common. Chilled semen is used as well, because breeders often search widely for the right size and coat. Each profile lists the methods on offer.

The dog artificial insemination guide explains timing and shipping. Then see how VerifiedStuds works.

Maltipoo stud service FAQ

How much is a Maltipoo stud fee?

Most owners charge $500 to $1,500. However, small, proven sires with tested coat genes can ask up to $2,000. These figures are estimates.

What health tests should a Maltipoo stud have?

There is no official list. Even so, good breeders test patellas, eyes and heart, and run a DNA panel. We also require a negative brucellosis test.

How big do Maltipoos get?

Usually 5 to 20 pounds. The size depends mainly on whether the Poodle parent is a Toy or a Miniature.

Do Maltipoos shed?

Very little in most cases, because both parent breeds are low shedding. Even so, coats vary, and a DNA test helps.

Can crossbreeds be listed on the site?

Yes. Purebred dogs and crosses can both be listed on VerifiedStuds.
