Cockapoo stud dogs with eye checks and coat DNA

Cockapoo Stud Dogs

Cheerful, clever and happy in almost any home, this mix of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle is the oldest of the designer crosses. It is a cross, not an AKC breed, so quality varies widely. Therefore, health tests and coat DNA matter even more. VerifiedStuds shows both on each stud profile, beside the fee.

What Cockapoo stud dogs cost

Cockapoo stud fees usually run from $500 to $1,500. A health-tested male with no proven litters often charges $500 to $900. However, proven sires with tested coat genes and popular colors can ask $1,000 to $2,000.

These are market estimates, since fees are private. Many breeders also use a purebred Poodle as the sire. So compare our Poodle stud page too. The stud fee guide explains contracts and return services.

Health tests for Cockapoo stud dogs

Because the Cockapoo is a cross, it has no AKC parent club and no CHIC list. So a careful stud owner covers the risks of both parent breeds. We suggest these results:

Test

What we accept

Eyes

Exam by a board-certified ophthalmologist (ACVO)

Hips

OFA hip evaluation or PennHIP

Patellas

Veterinary patellar luxation exam

DNA panel

prcd-PRA, FN and PFK deficiency, plus coat genes

Brucellosis

Negative test taken before the breeding

Eyes matter most, because both parent breeds carry progressive retinal atrophy and both get cataracts. In addition, English Cocker lines can carry familial nephropathy (FN), a kidney disease, while American Cocker lines can carry PFK deficiency. Therefore, a DNA panel should cover all three. Registered results are on the OFA website.

See our Poodle health testing guide and the other health testing guides for more detail.

How to choose between Cockapoo stud dogs

First, ask which Cocker is behind him. An American Cocker Spaniel gives a smaller, rounder-headed dog. In contrast, an English Cocker Spaniel gives a slightly taller, more athletic one. The two types differ in size and energy, so match him to your female.

Next, learn the generation labels. An F1 is a first cross, an F1b is an F1 bred back to a Poodle, and multigen means both parents are Cockapoos. Each step changes how predictable the coat will be.

Finally, ask for coat DNA and check his ears. The furnishings gene is linked to low shedding. Meanwhile, long, hairy ears trap moisture, and ear infections run in some lines.

Cockapoo temperament and background

Cockapoos appeared in the United States in the 1960s, well before the doodle boom. That long history means multigenerational lines exist, and some clubs, such as the American Cockapoo Club, keep their own registries. The cross is not recognized by the AKC, and results vary from dog to dog.

At their best, Cockapoos are outgoing, bright and eager to please. However, no dog is truly allergy free. As a result, honest breeders test coats and health, and they explain the limits to buyers.

Natural breeding, chilled and frozen semen

Cockapoos of similar size breed naturally. However, when a small male is used on a larger female, artificial insemination is the practical route. Chilled semen is common as well, because breeders often search widely for the right size and coat genes. Each profile lists the methods on offer.

The dog artificial insemination guide explains timing and shipping. Then see how VerifiedStuds works.

Cockapoo stud service FAQ

How much is a Cockapoo stud fee?

Most owners charge $500 to $1,500. However, proven sires with tested coat genes can ask up to $2,000. These figures are estimates.

What health tests should a Cockapoo stud have?

There is no official list. Even so, good breeders test eyes, hips and patellas, and run a DNA panel. We also require a negative brucellosis test.

What is the difference between American and English Cockapoos?

The name refers to the Cocker Spaniel parent. English Cocker crosses tend to be a little taller and more active.

Do Cockapoos shed?

Some do. Shedding depends on coat genes, which a DNA test can show. Therefore, ask for the stud's furnishings and shedding results.

Can crossbreeds be listed on the site?

Yes. Purebred dogs and crosses can both be listed on VerifiedStuds.
