How much does it cost to breed a dog? The typical total

For a healthy female and a normal birth, many breeders spend about $2,500 to $7,000 on one litter. If she needs a cesarean, or puppies need extra care, the total can pass $10,000. Breed matters a great deal. For example, French Bulldogs and English Bulldogs usually need artificial insemination and a planned cesarean, which puts them at the top of the range.

What it costs to breed a dog before the mating

First come the health tests. Hips, elbows, eyes, heart and DNA tests add up, and the list depends on the breed. See the health testing guides. In addition, both dogs need a brucellosis test, and she needs a pre-breeding exam.

Next is the stud fee, which is usually close to the price of one puppy. The stud fee guide shows ranges by breed. Then comes timing. A series of progesterone tests costs a few hundred dollars, but it prevents a missed breeding. Read progesterone testing for dogs.

If the stud lives far away, add collection and overnight shipping for chilled semen, plus the insemination itself. Frozen semen costs more again, because it usually needs a surgical or transcervical insemination.

During pregnancy

Pregnancy itself is fairly cheap. Budget for an ultrasound at about four weeks and an x-ray near the end, along with better food in the last third. See dog pregnancy tests and the dog pregnancy calculator.

You will also need a whelping box, a heat source, scales, bedding and basic supplies. Our whelping guide has the list.

The birth: the cost you cannot predict

Most births need no help. However, some do, and they rarely happen in office hours. An emergency cesarean commonly costs $1,500 to $5,000, and more at a specialist hospital at night. Therefore, set that money aside before the breeding, or do not breed.

Some breeds plan a cesarean from the start. Ask your vet for a quote early, since a booked surgery costs less than an emergency one.

Raising the puppies

From birth to eight weeks, the puppies need worming, a first vaccination, a vet check, microchips and a great deal of food. Large litters of large breeds eat astonishing amounts. In addition, AKC litter registration costs $25 plus $2 per puppy.

Then there is your time. Newborn puppies need watching around the clock in the first weeks. Many breeders take time off work, which is a real cost even though no invoice shows it.

How much it costs to breed a dog compared with what a litter earns

Income depends on litter size and puppy price, and neither is guaranteed. A litter of two can leave a breeder thousands of dollars behind. See how many puppies a dog can have. As a result, experienced breeders say they break even over many litters, not on each one.
