What makes a good stud dog: seven things to check

What Makes a Good Stud Dog

Looks catch the eye, but they are the last thing an experienced breeder checks. A sire shapes dozens of puppies, so his faults multiply. This VerifiedStuds guide lists the seven qualities that matter, whether you are choosing a stud or deciding if your own male measures up.

1. Registration and pedigree

A stud needs full registration, because puppies from a limited-registration sire get no papers. His pedigree matters too. It shows which dogs stand behind him and how closely related he is to your female. Read full vs limited AKC registration and coefficient of inbreeding explained.

2. Health clearances: what makes a good stud dog stand out

This is where a good stud separates from an average one. Each breed's parent club lists the tests it expects, such as hips, elbows, eyes, heart and DNA. A good stud has them all, registered under his name where anyone can check. See the health testing guides.

In addition, he has a current negative brucellosis test. No responsible owner skips it.

3. Temperament

Dogs inherit much of their temperament. Therefore, a nervous or sharp dog should stay out of any breeding program, however handsome he is. A good stud is steady with strangers, calm at the vet and typical of his breed, whether that means a bold guardian or a merry spaniel.

4. Structure and movement

Good structure is about function, not fashion. A sound dog moves freely, stands squarely and breathes easily. Extremes cause trouble, such as very short faces, heavy wrinkles or exaggerated angles. So compare him with the breed standard, and prefer a moderate dog.

No dog is perfect. As a result, the real question is whether his strengths cover your female's weaknesses.

5. Titles, work and offspring

Titles are outside proof. A show championship means several judges found him a good example of the breed. Likewise, a field, herding or sport title shows that he can do the job he was bred for.

However, puppies are the best proof of all. A stud whose offspring are healthy, sound and consistent is worth more than a champion who has sired nothing. Ask to see them.

6. Fertility

A stud must be able to get females pregnant. A proven dog has recent litters of normal size. For an unproven or older dog, a semen evaluation shows count, motility and shape. Read stud dog sperm quality.

Good management counts as well. A dog bred every day delivers fewer sperm, so a careful owner spaces his bookings. See how often a stud dog can breed.

7. Age

Most breeds cannot complete their clearances before 24 months, which makes two years the sensible starting age. Fertility then stays strong for years, and it declines in older dogs. Our guide to stud dog age limits covers both ends.

What makes a good stud dog owner

The owner matters almost as much as the dog. A good one answers questions, shares documents, uses a written contract and turns away unsuitable females. Take our list of questions to ask a stud dog owner with you.

What makes a good stud dog: FAQ

What is the most important quality in a stud dog?

Health and temperament come first. Both are strongly inherited, and both affect every puppy he sires.

Does a stud dog need to be a champion?

No. Titles are useful proof, but health results, temperament and the quality of his puppies matter more.

What does "proven stud" mean?

It means he has already sired at least one litter. A proven stud has puppies you can look at.

Can a pet-quality dog be a stud?

Only if he has full registration, passes his health tests and is a sound example of the breed. Many pets do not meet that bar.

At what age is a stud dog at his best?

Usually from about two to seven years. Before that his tests are not final, and later his fertility slowly drops.
